No Choke, Engine Stops !

Post by GlimmerTwins » Mon Jan 28, 2019 1:30 pm

My first post so here goes,,,,
I have a 2005 XJR1300 with just over 4,000 ,miles.
bike is in excellent all original condition
so....
Ignition is on, pull choke on, hit starter button bike fires up, burbles away nicely ( sort of ).
let it warm for a while,
push choke lever to `off` position & engine stops !

I`ve now had the carbs off 3 times ( getting good at it too ! )
Each time all jets removed & cleaned out with carb cleaner & air line,
still the engine stops when choke is pushed to the off position.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
thanks

Have you adjusted the tickover?...if you can't get it to tickover at the correct revs...i'd suggest the slow jets are still blocked.

Hi hairy thanks for your reply.
No, I couldnt get it to tickover,
Ive also put new plugs in.
I shall clean the jets and try again as you suggest.

Hairy is asking 'have you tried to adjusting the tick over' via the adjuster on the carbs.
How long are you leaving on choke before shutting it off?

Thanks for your question Chris however it seems `4th time lucky` :eusadance:
Carbs put back on after ANOTHER extensive clean,
Petrol tap turned to `Prime`
Pressed `start` button and fired up nicely,
I could rev to approx 4-5,000 revs, closed throttle and the bike ticked over.
In my excitement, after 5 minutes of running the bike I went in for a brew,,,
Came back to the bike 20 mins later to find a puddle of petrol under the bike !
I noticed that I hadnt switched the petrol tap to its `On ` position from `Prime` when I first fired it up.
Could that have been the reason for the leak ?
Thanks once again for your input guys, much appreciated

If it was left on prime this is likely the reason for the leak.

mmmm...
I`ll put the carbs back on tonight (took them off to inspect the leak issue & ran out of time putting them back on again)
then report on what happens. Fingers crossed

Carbs fitted,
petrol tap on the, `prime` position,
ignition on,
press starter button,
Bike fires up,,,
For 5 seconds max, petrol tap is on `prime` position,
Then,
Turn tap to `On` position,
Bike is left running for 5 minutes with hand full of revs now & then, then its switched off.
Bike is left to stand
After half an hour back to the garage for inspection,
No leaks !
I understand that, if there is a petrol leak from the carbs there must be something wrong and it needs addressing asap for obvious reasons.
For now, it seems to have stopped, but I will keep my eye out for any problems.
Thanks again guys for your advice & input
