Hi all
and a hny
now for the topic
i had a set of metzlers put on and they are not wearing to well.
the back one needs replacing now after 10,000km its a ME Z4
the front is the match for the back tyre.
cant tell the specs of the front tyre because the bike is in the shed and a f#@#**% big snake is in there with it :o im not going out there for little while...............................yet
anyway the front tyre is the issue , its has worn on one side more than the other and its concaved a little .
tyre pressure i was told by the guys that fitted them was 34 front 36 back and to keep them at that
i have checked steering bearing , wheel bearing there is no free play in either ,forks seem ok the bike rides great , plus no shake of the handlebars or anything that sugguest it has a problem
could this just be a bad tyre or is it something that ive missed
this might sound stupid but could it be the forks, even though it feels fine. i only notice the tyre like this after a 350km ride the other day, it was fine when i took off
i hope its just something simple , like the rider
any idea to solve this problem :?

Happy New Year (hope the snake disappears soon.....guess you don't need to worry about the XJR being stolen!)

I always put 2.5 bar in the front & 2.9 bar in the back, whatever that equates to in psi.

My last front tyre had worn on either side of the centre of the tread and was causing some bad handling problems, so much so that even though the tyre had not worn out, I lost confidence in the handling. New front tyre = problem solved.

Only ever used, Michelin tyres on my XJR, but my rear in now a Dunlop Roadsmart. When my front wears out, I will replace it with a Dunlop Roadsmart

6,200 miles is good for a rear. The pressures I, and a lot of others use is 36 front, 42 rear which makes the bike steer a lot better. Tyres are usually manufactured to suit the bike so maybe the front isn't the right one :dontknow:
If you can, change the pair and try some Dunlop Roadsmarts, they seem a popular choice.
Type "tyres" into the search and see what comes up.

By the way, can't use the bike 'cos there's a snake in the shed has got to be a first on this site, well done. :applause1:

Hey Fender,
I have just done the return trip to Phillip Island from Perth, a few track days and some hard country rides.
Michelin Pilot Roads, dual compound and now done 18,000ks. Still a little bit of life on them. Have a look at Tyres for Bikes in Vic Park. $540 a set fitted.
Cheers

There's a new version on the Avon Storms out called the Storm 2 Ultra. They have got good reviews so far and I had Storm STs on my yellow bike and thought they were very good.

http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle/storm-2-ultra

Worth a look

Gday fender,
I am out near Bassendean.
Work at Midland and ride for a living.
I have tried Battleax 021's with poor results on the XJR. More than happy with the Pilot Roads. Due for a new set now as have nominated for the Far Ride in Feb to Hopetoun and back. 1200k in the day.
Stay safe and catch up one day.
Cheers Brian

we can catch up for sure
i live out near the lakes roadhouse on the great eastern highway
normally go for runs to york and beyound and down south aswel.
i know some great little places out that way and normally have a stopover somewhere out that way
so keep in contact and hope to see you on the road 8).
safe riding and enjoy :respekt:

ps i'll never use metzlers again, too soft.
or it could be the heat from the roads. bloody hot over ere. 47 on the road last week going inland

For Aussie riders, and UK guys as well as anyone else who rides on the 'correct' side of the road, more pronounced wear will occur on the right side of the tyre due to the camber of the road. I mean the road is crowned in the centre (to allow rainwater to run off) which causes the right side of the tyre to wear a little faster.

I've just ordered another set of Bridgestone BT54's for my next interstate trip. Anyone who says they need more grip than these 'budget' tyres provide is full of crap or on the track. Theyre cheap(ish), wear evenly and in my opinion suit the XJR. Lets face it, the XJR is not a race bike and runs out of ground clearance long before these tyres run out of grip.

On icy, snowy or salted roads it may be different, good luck with that....

Ha, friends were discussing a paddle rear for my XJR just the other day, would certainly kick out hellava roost, might be a touch heavy for the really deep sandy single track though. May be a touch light on for suspension travel as well.....
